Berlin’s Techno Fashion Trends, an introduction.

When the Berlin Wall fell, the city assumed an identity of distinction—and for party-goers, that
distinction was all about anti-movements. Anti-mainstream, anti-capitalism, anti-commercialization. These ideals led to an underground techno scene that flourished in the 90s and was based in Berlin’s abandoned industrial complexes.

As its techno scene developed, fashion became a subversive element of club culture. Music with wave, techno, and punk influence filled the empty concrete walls where youth wore second-hand Adidas, Daniel Poole pieces, and Stüssy. (Tons of Stüssy.) Even music labels started to influence fashion and vice versa, like with Frankfurt’s Velvet Monkees.
Berlin was at the forefront of streetwear and fetishwear. Some might have called Berlin of the 90s the last domain of the true punk spirit. But by the early 2000s, Berlin’s underground scene saw style-policing bouncers show up. The tie between fashion and underground clubbing was pulled tight—along with a sense of exclusivity.

Streetwear was becoming Fashion, fetishwear was becoming Fashion, in a blend of brutalism, punk ideals, black monotones, and anti-everything. So, how did high fashion get involved with Berlin? And why is the city’s club culture so fundamental to current collections released by brands like Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Gucci?

A Tale of Two Cities

“There’s a sense of style here that’s not so much about fashion. It’s not brand related. It’s sportswear, combined with fetishwear, combined with vintage.” -Honey-Dijon, DJ

Berlin’s 90s scene spilled over into a more exclusive and spread-out club culture in the 2000s. The world began to notice that Berlin had a certain je ne sais quoi—and people wanted in. What began as an anti-mainstream movement born in the late 1980s started seeing coverage from major publications. By 2011, celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow were elbowing their way into Berghain and squealing about it on shows like Ellen.

Unsurprisingly, this attention from the mainstream threatened Berlin’s underground club culture. After all, is it still underground if the whole world knows what happens in the mazes at Griesmuehle? (And, seriously, who the fuck let Gwyneth Paltrow into Berghain?)

Fashion is a great lens to study this shift. At the same time clubs like Berghain were seeing major international coverage, others were paying closer attention to what was worn in these clubs. Into the 2000s, Berlin’s underground fashion cues evolved. The emphasis on baggy streetwear and black stayed, but fetishwear came to the forefront. So did finer ateliers—enough so that Angela Merkel herself started to order her (power) pantsuits and other tailored pieces from Berlin-based creators. Her goal: don’t be flashy.

The city had become associated with a higher class of fashion than its earliest club-goers could have imagined. It was born in the city’s underground clubs, but it had gotten a Chancellor-level nod of approval.

Berlin’s Techno Fashion Trends with a Capital F;

“The mainstream comes to you, but you have to go to the underground.” – Frank Zappa

High fashion shouldn’t succeed in Berlin if viewed in a certain way. Fashion houses are focused on profits, celebrity, and mass production—and Berlin’s underground doesn’t give a fuck about fame, fortune, or commercialization. (At least, in theory.)

But that hasn’t stopped a fruitful relationship, perhaps even muse-like symbiosis, between Berlin and high fashion houses. Back in 2019, multiple collections included overt callouts to fetishwear and leather, including Gucci and Givenchy’s fall collections. Throw in Balenciaga’s multi-year pivot toward streetwear with an emphasis on black monotones and brutalism, and there’s plenty of proof that Berlin’s aesthetic has gone high fashion.

But it’s not a straightforward relationship. The underground doesn’t like to acknowledge these fashion houses because of their commercial status. And, at the same time, fashion houses aren’t necessarily interested in being associated with Berlin’s more general skepticism of capitalism.

Case Study: Balenciaga’s Brutalist Store & the Demna Effect

“Demna’s unique approach, nurtured by sociological observation, made him a natural fit” -Francois Henri Pinault, CEO of Kering

Berlin’s Techno and high fashion trends aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. And let’s keep in mind that fashion designers aren’t appropriating from the city’s underground if they’re also a part of it. Let’s zero in on an example in Demna Gvasalia.

Back in 2015, he was appointed as the creative director of Balenciaga. Only three years later in 2018, Gvasalia opened Balenciaga’s first retail location in Berlin. The store’s interior was built in a brutalist style recognizable throughout the city’s eastern half. This is a clear call-out to Berlin’s early club culture since its earliest clubs occupied vast industrial buildings.

However, Gvasalia’s take on the Berlin store’s interior design isn’t specific to Berlin. Dubbed ‘Raw Architecture’, this design will be mirrored across multiple new Balenciaga retail stores, including their latest London location. Officially, Gvasalia’s Balenciaga says that it’s echoing the city’s ‘modernist architecture legacy’, but for Berlin club kids who remember the 90s, the store’s design—and even the clothes hung on its racks—are probably incredibly familiar.

Is it any wonder that we’re collectively looking back to a period that was more fun, more hopeful, more free?
These thoughts in our heads can’t always come out as words. Sometimes, all we can hope for is that we can express them through art. That’s the idea behind our graphic tees here at Kuldrop, which typically feature geometric shapes, basic colours (if any at all), gradients, and abstract typography.
Techno is the answer to your problems. Yeah, we miss the dripping, dark clubs and the catharsis they provide, but the music lives on. If you’re wandering into a dystopian future that you have no way of controlling, then the least you can hope for is a banging techno track — and perhaps the apparel to match. Techno tees encapsulate all we love about the culture: dark, rebellious, and cool as fuck.

In the t-shirt above, you’ll see all the staples of techno clothing: fine lines, a nod to 90’s techno fliers, and a depiction of the world that signals unity, just not in the way normies understand it.

Placing classic paintings on tees isn’t new, but how producers do it continues to evolve. Who doesn’t love a remix? You’ll find classic Renaissance paintings given a modern makeover that’s fit for these times; just like the paintings, these t-shirts disrupt the status quo.

For this “100 poster-project” I wanted to strengthen my skills in typography, layout, and composition. That led me to set the constraints to work with a predefined canvas size and not to use any color – which would “force” me to explore more possibilities and experiment further within the focus areas instead.

I do want to point out that my process is not this linear every time. Sometimes it is just a mess. Some ideas get stuck in the sketching phase for days or weeks before I pick them up again.
What’s your worst experience as a designer? How did you manage?

I have a background as a motion designer. A few years back, I worked in-house at an animation studio that did all kinds of projects. Occasionally we did a few commercials, and this was one of those projects. The client was a nightmare, not really listening to us, demanding high-quality work without wanting to pay for it, ridiculous timeframe—you get it, the list goes on.

Because of the tight timeframe, we had to jumpstart everything, making vital mistakes with the communication that later would come back to bite us. Anyway, after completing the whole pre-production phase, we had numerous handoffs to the client and we were ready to take it into production. That’s when the client told us that they need to run it through even more managers to get their permission to proceed… which to us came as a shock. This did not feel good at all.

A big part of our team wanted us to cancel the whole project, but long story short: we didn’t. We ended up accepting the client’s endless nitpicking, unmotivated feedback, and strange requests. This project was no fun at all. In retrospect, we should’ve trusted our gut feeling and cancelled the project, because we ended up making a video we weren’t proud of, at all.

What motivated you to start your “One Poster-Everyday” project?

I needed a personal creative outlet, to make something in absence of clients and commissions. And I have been thinking of doing a challenge like this for a long time, but I guess I thought that I lacked the discipline to actually pull it off.

This whole quarantine situation became the perfect opportunity to try it. So, my first goal became to make one poster every day for 30 days. Once I proved to myself I could do that, I upped the challenge to 100 days and then eventually one year.

The social pressure of knowing that my followers expect me to make a poster every day helps me to not give up and quit. So far so good, but I still have roughly 100 more to make.

Hopefully, I will learn a few tricks along the way that could help me out of the inevitable moments when the creative block strikes.

Concept is capturing an idea or a feeling and finding a way to represent it.

Concept is born when the message and the design tie together, when a connection between the content and the viewer emerges. The concept is like a mechanism for the viewer, to help make the material more understandable. A concept is not just a bunch of ideas; ideas are just seeds. Alone, they can be seen as abstract sparks of creativity that lack relevance. But when ideas are expressed in a medium, they become activated with the potential to grow into a concept.

We caught up with him to make a street art t-shirt collection with some of his paintings that would reflect this spontaneity we found in his notebook. A few months later and without doubt his t-shirts are one of the most successful series in our gallery. Today, we would like to talk about his thoughts and work process. But first, some introduction.

Rafael Gray became known in the early 80s through his work in the streets of Paris and New York (graffiti and posters). From his urban experiences, he keeps a spontaneous graphic gesture and a constant search for new spaces for his painting. Opposed to the fixity of the painting, he initiated in 1988 a nomadic work where the canvas leaves its support-frame, to travel around the world.

Setting in motion which he explores in parallel by a poetics between painting and cinema. Accumulating large series of images, it takes into account both the canvas and the screen. The images of the world seen through his travels, are juxtaposed with the images found (press photos, posters), are recycled, and reappropriated by the act of painting. Voluntarily chaotic, this process which links the tables like so many disordered photograms, is revealed in films which bring together the sequences and the diversity in the same progression.

You were recently involved in an outdoor exhibition. What was it about and what will be your next move?

Yes. I recently curated a group-show called “L’Exposition Invisible” in an old concentration camp hidden from the public’s eye. I called artists to participate, saying the action was illegal and that no one would see the show. Surprisingly, more than 40 artists responded to the call, and the show was a success.

The problem I encounter often is the lack of visibility some art or social events have. Being visible is a political issue. What has visibility and what doesn’t? Who has the power to give visibility? Visibility is changing with new media like Instagram, but the mainstream still fiercely dominates.

I think the next move is acting on helping our planet. This idea has always been my main preoccupation. You see today ecology is visibly mainstream… but who really does anything about it?

Awarded with two short films at International Animation Festivals in Toronto and Mexico City, Ludwig Camarillo has specialized in arts and design as well as Stop Motion and Illustration. Along his 12 years career he has gained a strong academic experience in the high education System and has published a large number of personal projects in various creative fields such as printing techniques and digital retouching. A restless mind that is constantly exploring new techniques and pushing himself to the next level.

Can you tell us about your background and how it’s been to move from Mexico to Barcelona?

My background comes from graphic design. But before my formal studies, I was interested in drawing, illustration, painting, printing, photography, and paper crafts. I was also fascinated by moving images since childhood. So, one day, I started looking for studies in motion graphics outside Mexico and found out about Spain. Since then, six years have passed since I moved to Barcelona.

Can you tell us about your creative process? How do you start a design project?

Sure. First of all, it doesn’t matter if it’s a graphic design, an illustration, or a motion graphic project. I usually follow the same workflow—but not necessarily in the same order. I normally do R+D first. Sometimes, I prefer writing concepts on paper before starting to draw. But if the idea is more abstract, I go straight to sketching or storyboarding. The most important thing is to come up with a clear idea of “something to tell”, something to communicate. If I reach this point, then the rest follows organically.

What made decide to come to Europe?

I call it the auto exile, haha! Really, I was looking for a change—like a reset from scratch, a time for change, to reinvent myself and to expand my creativity. And Stop Motion animation was the best excuse to jump across the ocean.

Uh! Big theme. Nowadays… I don’t think so. But perhaps 15 years ago. Today the art/design scene is growing big in Mexico. You can find many great artists and designers doing amazing work. So… I think we can be very similar and have many differences at the same time. However, it’s true that geography and culture influence how things are produced. In that wide sense, we will always experience differences—isn’t that beautiful?

What advice would you give to someone from Latin America who would like to move to Europe and make a living as a designer?

I’m not sure if I can give any advice. I can only share my experience. If you are a curious and restless person who likes the challenges of multicultural encounters, and you have the courage and desire, just look forward and don’t forget your portfolio. Be prepared for everything. Also, having a plan B and a map always helps!

Where do you find your inspiration from?

Literally everywhere. Music helps me a lot to get in the mood. Doodling is amazing to get lost by seeking shapes and forms. Nature, of course! Movies, theater, exhibitions, performances, and literature, too. Daily life also gives me a lot of good stuff to connect with different ideas.

Obviously, the Internet and social media belong to my inspirational archives. But in the end, it’s more about what you do with all these inputs. It doesn’t matter If I don’t use it right away because it might pop up sooner or later in a way that I can apply to a project.

We have launched 3 t-shirt series named Signum. What was your intention to make these designs and what was your working process?

Signum emerges from an aesthetic exploration of digital collage and the human body. The original intention was to model some hands with clay for a photo shoot. But it was requiring too much time and I was curious to see the visual results quickly, so I began taking photos of my own hand and that’s when the idea of the signals came up. Eventually, during the process, the idea evolved into a sculptural representation of body language. In this case, only the use of hands. Avoiding sign language for the blind, I recreated common signs as a contemporary representation of cultural and historically used hand signs, considered almost as universal languages. Like the Shaka sign, mainly used in the surf culture; the fist as a symbol of Power; and the Peace and Love sign, which was used as the Victory symbol in the 1960s during a push for nuclear disarmament.

Art and fashion, always intertwined, and now more so than ever. Today you’ll find influential artists from a range of artistic disciplines given a platform in the world of fashion. Their touch is everywhere, from major labels to boutique houses, from catwalk set designs to clothing design. And is it surprising? This, after all, is the era of self-expression, a period when clothing has moved far beyond their practical benefits, and functions to reveal something more about the wearer, and society in general. Wearable art is a logical extension of this notion, and a move that benefits everyone. The artist gains a wider audience, fashion gains credibility through association with a respected culture, and the consumer expresses himself or herself. And perhaps the public benefit from exposure to new ideas, too.

There are many ways in which art and fashion overlap, but in this article, we’re going to take a look at the intersection between fashion and the most public and unsanctioned of all visual arts: street art.

Street Art and Fashion

Street art may not be universally beloved, but it does play an undeniably important role in society, or rather, to a section of society. The low-level entry point has historically made it an appealing outlet for people usually underrepresented in more formal art circles; the term ‘street art’ may refer primarily to the location of the art, but it also speaks to the roots of the movement, too.

Like all art, there is a message or opinion expressed in each piece. Unlike all art, it is mostly spontaneous and informal, and has a strong countercultural spirit.

After the rise of street art in the latter half of the 20th century, it didn’t take long for street art to have an impact on the graphic t-shirt world, an influence that continues to this day. Indeed, there are t-shirt labels whose continued success is thanks to their street art connections.

There’s also little risk of movement stagnation with ever-growing numbers of independent producers. With art and design styles always evolving and adapting, and high-quality printing techniques increasingly more affordable and accessible, we’ll inevitably see more street art appearing on t-shirts.

Street Art Crossovers

Keith Haring

A pioneering figure in the street art world, Keith Haring was one of the first artists to bring elements of “low” culture, which includes street art, into “high” culture spaces, like museums and art galleries. His style was characterised by bright colours, accessible imagery, the simple representation of the elements, and, most of all, a strong social message, often dealing with contemporary issues such as AIDS, drug addiction, and apartheid.

He stood out in a sea of emerging street artists by highlighting serious issues through fun and upbeat aesthetics. He undertook many collaborative projects during his career, the most famous being his work with Vivienne Westwood on her “Witches” collections, and is regarded as one of the primary reasons why street art has become so important to fashion.
